Iran, Turkey, Russia FMs to discuss Syria late December

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 16

By Emil Ilgar – Trend:

Iranian, Turkish and Russian foreign ministers would hold a trilateral meeting intended to discuss the Syrian crisis late December, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said, Mehr reported Dec. 16.

He called on other regional countries to partake in the diplomatic talks to resolve the tensions in the region.

Sanaei didn’t mention specific date for the meeting, but Turkey has announced that the meeting would be held on Dec. 27.

Sanaei’s call to other nations to join the negotiations comes as Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Syria on December 16 and said there was no disagreement between Turkey, Russia and Iran on the need for a Syria truce.

At a news conference in Ankara, Cavusoglu also said Russian President Vladimir Putin had told his Turkish counterpart that any new talks on Syria, planned in Kazakhstan, would be complementary to intermittent peace efforts in Geneva, Reuters reported.

Cavusoglu added that Turkey would not directly speak with representatives of the Syrian government.
