At least three people were killed and up to 27 injured Thursday in a suicide car bomb attack on a police headquarters in central Baquba, capital of Diyala province, a provincial police source said.

A suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden car into the checkpoint of the main entrance of the provincial headquarters of Diyala police and blew it up, causing severe damages to the surrounding buildings at the scene, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"We have three people killed and 16 security members wounded, along with 11 civilians, according to the latest reports," the source said, changing his earlier report when he put the toll at three killed and nine wounded.

The attack came a day after two deadly suicide attacks in the province that killed eight people and wounded some 89 others.

Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 despite repeated U.S. and Iraqi military operations against them.
