Armed terrorists have killed the son of Syria's grand mufti together with a Syrian university professor, making the two the latest victims of a new wave of assassinations, which has hit the country, Press TV reported.

On Sunday, an armed terrorist group ambushed Saria, son of the leading clergy, Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, and professor of history at Aleppo University, Mohammad al-Omar, while the two were accompanying each other on the way to the university in the northwest of the country, Syria's state Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

A police source in the northwestern city of Idleb said the terrorists had attacked the two near the Ebla University on the Idleb-Aleppo highway.

The spate of targeted kilings, which has targeted high-profile figures across the country, started late last week. Since last Sunday, seven noted figures, including five top academicians, have been assassinated in the country.

On Wednesday, terrorists killed nuclear engineer and university professor, Aws Abdel Karim Khalil, and Tayssir al-Oqla, a senior security officer, respectively in the western cities of Homs and Hama.

The Syrian authorities have been blaming the unrest since mid-March on "armed gangs" allegedly financed by the West and some Arab countries.

Foreign journalists are barred from Syria, where security and military forces have killed an estimated 2,700 people during a crackdown on protests, according to the United Nations.
