The use of modern information technology and electronic services is the most effective way to improve efficiency in the fight against corruption in Azerbaijan, minister of taxes Fazil Mammadov said at a conference entitled 'Fight against corruption in Azerbaijan: achievements and prospects,' in Shamakhi on Wednesday.

He said one of the ways to fight corruption is to increase the number of remote check-ups.

"The new software introduced by the Ministry to carry out desk audits, allowed us to increase more efficiency," Mr Mammadov said. He added the crackdown against corruption is in the ministry's focus.

"The main direction in this area is to increase the efficiency of the tax authorities' activities, minimise contact between officials and citizens, strengthen oversight mechanisms and increase background knowledge of personnel and their qualifications," the minister said.

The delegation of the International Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA), created on the initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Austrian government, the European Anti-Fraud Office and other relevant parties attended the conference.
