Iranian lawmaker Alireza Zakani has become the latest in the chain of political figures to join the country's upcoming presidential election, Press TV reported.

The secretary general of the Society of Followers of the Islamic Revolution officially announced his candidacy on Saturday night.

Zakani said the country needs a comprehensive roadmap -- one which is not built upon Western models.

The principlist Front of the Epic-Makers of the Islamic Revolution has officially voiced support for Zakani's candidacy.

Less than two months to go until election day in Iran, more political figures are joining what is widely expected to be a tight race.

The Islamic Republic's 11th presidential election will be held on June 14. Presidential hopefuls can register from May 7 to 11.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and candidates must be vetted for qualifications by the Guardian Council.
