US Secretary of State John Kerry has consulted with the Syrian opposition and US allies on reports of chemical weapons use in Syria, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Thursday, dpa reported.
Kerry spoke with Syrian opposition leader Ahmad Jarba to express condolences to the Syrian people and stress the US commitment to looking into the situation. The Syrian opposition claimed Wednesday that 1,300 were killed in a toxic gas attack.
"If these reports are true, it would be an outrageous and flagrant escalation of use of chemical weapons by the regime," Psaki said.
Kerry also called UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and EU High Representative Catherine Ashton.
