(autoinsidernews) - Spy phototographers caught a prototype of the next-generation 2008 Jeep Liberty out testing. Looking like a leftover prototype for the recently introduced Dodge Nitro, the Jeep-signature seven slot grille is just one sign that is not the Dodge sibling. Since the Nitro was based on a heavily modified Liberty platform, it only makes sense that the next Liberty rides on the same platform. But the next-generation Liberty is not simply a clone of the Nitro, with the Liberty appearing to be a few inches taller to offer additional utility, and a family resemblance to the Jeep Commander, reports Trend.

The Liberty sports a new headlights, larger windshield, revised roof pillars, unique taillight lenses, a reworked rear bumper. The Liberty also has a taller hinged rear window, which means that the rear glass can be independently raised from the rear hatch.

The Liberty will likely share some version of the independent front suspension and five-link rear suspension found on the Nitro, with the any changes focused on Jeep's Trail Rated motto.

With Jeep's two new models that slot in under the Liberty, the Patriot and Compass, Jeep had room to make the next Liberty a little larger, and the automaker has taken this chance to move the Liberty up a little from entry-level.
