This week Turkey and Japan will sign an intergovernmental agreement on the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Turkey, Zaman newspaper said on Tuesday.
According to the newspaper, the agreement will be signed during the visit of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Turkey. It is reported that the construction of a second nuclear power plant at Sinop will cost $20-22 billion. The nuclear power plant in Sinop will be built by Japanese firm Mitsubishi in a consortium with the French GDF Suez. However, the project's operator will be the Japanese company.
It is planned that the nuclear power plant at Sinop will consist of four units with a total capacity of 4500-5000 megawatts.
Construction of the plant will begin in 2017 and production of electricity by 2023.
Along with Japan, Canada, China and South Korea also participated in the tender for the construction of the nuclear power plant at Sinop.
The first nuclear power plant Akkuyu in Turkey will be built in accordance with a Russian project that provides for the construction of four VVER-1200power units. The agreement on the construction of the station was signed in May 2010.
The capacity of each unit will be 1200 MW, whereas the total capacity is 4800 MW. It is assumed that the units are to be commissioned in sequence with intervals of one year.
