Iran to consider gas imports from Turkmenistan - Energy Commission

TEHRAN, Iran, Sep.14

Trend:

Gas export from Turkmenistan could solve unbalanced gas production and consumption in Iran, said the spokesman of parliament's energy commission, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Mostafa Nakhaei has indicated that while Iran has mega gas resources but it is not contradictory to importing gas from Turkmenistan.

It is expected that the agenda of the Iran oil ministry would be to resume gas import from Turkmenistan to compensate energy losses and provide supply to power plants for winter.

"Iran's gas resources are mostly in the south of the country but gas is consumed all over the country, the gas transaction has been defined in form of gas import and export, some part of the country needs to import gas and other part export surplus production it does not have a contradiction to country's general energy policies," the MP explained noting possible gas swap with Turkmenistan.

He noted that by cutting the gas connection with Turkmenistan, Iran has faced more damages were in the north of the country lack of proper infrastructure created problems for energy supply and the only reservoir in the north of the country is Sarakhs have faced a decline of pressure and increase of consumption, therefore, gas import from Turkmenistan would be a good help.

The MP has indicated that part of the power outage in summer was due to lack of providing gas to power plants and unbalanced gas production and consumption would create problems in winter for feed supply to power plants that could be solved by importing gas from Turkmenistan.

Iranian Minister of Oil has predicted 200 million cubic meters gas deficit per day in coming winter du to 10 percent increase of consumption.
