Stefan Priesner who has been appointed UN Resident Coordinator and resident UNDP Representative in Uzbekistan, handed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's letter on his appointment as head of the organization's mission to the country to Foreign Ministry officials, the press service of the Foreign Ministry stated.
During the meeting at the Ministry, the current state of and prospects for the development of bilateral relations were discussed.
The parties currently cooperate through effective cooperation in various fields. Uzbekistan and the UN actively collaborate in combating nuclear proliferation and overcoming socio-economic and environmental problems in the region, the fight against international terrorism, drug trafficking, and other issues.
The United Nations program is carried out jointly to assist development in Uzbekistan from 2010 to 2015.
The sides also exchanged views on specific international and regional issues, the Foreign Ministry press service said.
As previously reported, in June 2012, the former head of the UN Office in Uzbekistan Anita Nirody completed her mission in the country.
Anita Nirody was appointed to the post of UN Coordinator in Uzbekistan in 2008.
Uzbekistan became a full member of the UN on March 2, 1992 at the 46th session of the General Assembly.
The UN Office in Uzbekistan opened in 1993 and since then, the organization has supported the country in various fields through concrete projects at the local and national levels, consulting on the adoption of various international standards and regulations, as well as capacity building and the exchange of information and knowledge from around the world.
Today, there are seven agencies, funds and UN programs, which include the UN Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS).
