Iran, Russia military cooperation enters new stage

Iran's defense minister, Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan said that the cooperation between Iran and Russia has entered a new constructive period, the Islamic Republic's ISNA news agency reported Feb. 15.
"A new atmosphere is formed in the ties between Iran and Russia," Dehghan said, adding "several government bodies are negotiating with Russia in various fields."
The Islamic Republic also follows "good" military and defense agreements with Russia, the Iranian minister said.
Russian defense minister, General Sergei Shoygu visited Tehran on Jan. 20 and held talks with senior Iranian officials on ways to promote defense ties between Russia and the Islamic Republic.
The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on military cooperation during the visit which emphasizes fighting terrorism, extremism and separatism as well as boosting mutual cooperation for peace and security in the region.
The MoU also includes holding joint military drills, cooperation in military training as well as fighting against piracy in international waters and the Caspian Sea.
