The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is funding a new regional project to counter trafficking in persons (TIP), which is being implemented by the International Office of Migration (IOM), the U.S. embassy reported. The Turkmenistan component of this project was launched in October 2010.

The Central Asia Counter-Trafficking project is one of the many assistance projects made possible by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  Since 1992, the American people through USAID have provided over $90 million in programs that support Turkmenistan's economic growth, social sector, and community initiatives.

"Human trafficking is a problem that exists everywhere around the world.  With the generous funding from the American people for this project, IOM is committed to continuing our collaboration with Turkmenistan's government and civil society to strengthen prevention and protection efforts," Sub-Regional Coordinator for IOM Central Asia/IOM Turkmenistan Zlatko Zigic said at the event.

In Turkmenistan, IOM will collaborate with civil society organizations to hold prevention activities, such as information campaigns, training and educational events.  Special attention will be paid to expanding the network of counter-trafficking civil society organizations and opening a new hotline office in Turkmenabat city, while continuing to provide comprehensive protection services to victims of trafficking.
