Georgia, NATO Military Committee discuss cooperation issues

Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania met with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee (MC) General Knud Bartels in Brussels at the NATO headquarters, Georgian Defense Ministry told Trend on Friday.

During the meeting Alasania thanked the General Bartels for contribution to the development of the Georgian Armed Forces.

According to the Defense Ministry, existing relations and prospects of cooperation between Georgia and NATO were one of the main topics of conversation.

The sides also discussed international mission in Afghanistan and provision of assistance to local security forces in professional training after completion of the mission, as well as Georgia's role in this process.

Georgian Defense Minister also met in Brussels with the NATO Permanent Representatives from the Netherlands and France, Marjanne de Kwaasteniet and Jean-Baptiste Mattéi.

Irakli Alasania familiarized the diplomats with the reforms in the Armed Forces of Georgia. The sides discussed prospects of bilateral cooperation.

Georgian-French cooperation in the military sphere covers mainly education.

It is expected that a memorandum of understanding will be signed with the Netherlands.

Alasania noted the importance of European countries' support for Georgia on the path of integration into Euro-Atlantic structures. They also discussed the topics of London and Vilnius Summits and the possible participation of Georgia in the missions under the auspices of the EU and the UN.
