The Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) registered two opposition electoral blocs at a meeting Saturday ahead of parliamentary elections due to be held in November.

The CEC registered the Garabag and For the Sake of the People electoral blocs.

CEC Secretary Natig Mammadov presented information about the blocs and reported that both were established in accordance with the requirements of electoral legislation.

Mammadov said the Garabag bloc had created its emblem in accordance with the legislation.

The registration of the blocs was put to a vote and approved by 64 executive members of the CEC for the Garabag bloc. The registration of the For the Sake of the People bloc was approved by 24 executive members.

The Democracy, PFPA-Musavat and Reform electoral blocs have also submitted documents to the commission, CEC Head Mazahir Panahov said.

The Garabag bloc was established by the opposition Democrat Party and Umid Party, and For the Sake of the People was formed by the Liberal and the Civil and Development Parties.

The parliamentary election campaign began in Azerbaijan on Sept. 4.

President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on Sept. 3 scheduling the next parliamentary elections for Nov. 7.

Previous elections in the legislature were held in November 2005. In Azerbaijan, parliamentary elections are held on the majority system in 125 electoral districts.
