Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 23

By Anakhanum Khidayatova - Trend:

Europe attacks Azerbaijan for the sake of its geopolitical interests and economic ambitions, Sergey Markov, the person empowered to act for the president of the Russian Federation, the member of the Russian Public Chamber and political analyst, told Trend Sept. 23.

"The West is seeking to connect Azerbaijan to anti-Russian sanctions," he said. "Moreover, it wants to control the oil and gas corporations, oil and gas resources of Azerbaijan."

He said that Europe is seeking a coup to redistribute property and control the vast energy resources of Azerbaijan.

"At the same time, unfortunately, the EU ignores the fact that the existing model ensures rapid economic growth," he said. "It ignores that Azerbaijan is apparently the most secular multicultural open country among the Muslim countries and that the policy of the country's leadership is greatly supported."

Markov reiterated that Europe does not intend to achieve democracy.

"If it wanted democracy, then, first of all, it would strive for democracy in the EU countries, such as Latvia, Estonia, which, of course, are not democratic," he said.

Markov said that Azerbaijan must calmly react to the West's actions, hold election, invite missions from the countries willing to send observers, first of all, the CIS PA, then the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the various national missions.

"In the Public Chamber we are ready to form a mission together with the Chamber and the State Duma and send it to Azerbaijan," the expert said.

On September 11, Michael Link, Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), said that the ODIHR decided not to send an observation mission to the election in Azerbaijan. The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has today made a similar statement.

The parliamentary election will be held in Azerbaijan November 1.
