8 Presidents Expected to Participate in  Baku  Summit of GUAM:  GUAM Secretary General

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend E.Huseynov / Valeriy Chechelashvili, the GUAM Secretary General, informed in a telephone talk that eight presidents are expected to participate in the Baku summit of the international organization of GUAM, which unites Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

The GUAM summit will be held in Baku on 18-19 June. Chechelashvili said that the meeting will bring together the Presidents Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan, Mikhael Saakashviili, Vladimir Voronin, Moldova, and Victor Yuschenko, Ukraine. Moreover, the Romanian President Trian Basescu, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and Polish President Lekh Kachinski. "At the same time, Bulgarian Vice President, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister, US Deputy Secretary of State and more probably США, Croatian President Stepan Mesich are also expected to be attendance, he added. Arrangements for the summit and consultations with high ranking guests are in progress." The GUAM Secretary General voiced his hope to see new names in the list of participants.

As an alternative to CIS the four post-Soviet republics Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established this format in 1999 during the summit of the head of state of the European Union member-countries in Strasbourg. In 1999 Uzbekistan joined the organization, but left after four years. GUAM was established as an economic alliance of countries - potential participants of energy resource transportation projects. Gradually, the military political component, particularly, the establishment of the peacemaking forces, have been observed in its activities. The issue is expected to be under discussion at the forthcoming summit of GUAM in Baku.

In May Stepan Volkovetskiy, the Ukrainian ambassador to Azerbaijan, stated in talks with Trend that It is very difficult to achieve any compromise and resolution of problem troubling the countries within the CIS. "The CIS unites many countries, they are different and sometimes, their interests are contradictory, like in case with Azerbaijan and Armenia. "Try to come to a common ground," he stressed. GUAM is very different. This is the alliance of four countries with similar problems and similar positions and it is very easy to make any decision and fulfill the tasks," Volkovetskiy stated

The agenda of the Baku summit of GUAM is not publicized.
