Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 September/ Trend , corr S. Agayeva/ Azerbaijan demonstrated world its physical and spiritual power in Beijing Olympic Games, Mehriban Aliyeva, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation and first lady of Azerbaijan said during her meeting with the winners of Olympic Games on 2 September.
"Olympic Games were success for Azerbaijan and when our national anthem was played we all took a great pride in our sportsmen," Mehriban Aliyeva said.
According to Aliyeva, development of sport is one of the key priorities of the government. The number of Azerbaijani sportsmen showing good performance in Olympic Games is increasing in every Olympic Games. The services of Azerbaijani sportsmen are highly appreciated by the government and National Olympic Committee. Heydar Aliyev Foundation has decided to allot scholarships to the prize-winners of Olympic Games, President of Foundation said. All prize-winners of Olympic Games since Azerbaijan gained independence will be granted scholarships, Mehriban Aliyeva said.
The first lady of Azerbaijan also stressed the significance of organizing meetings of prize-winners with the youth, children brought in children's homes and boarding schools in order to advocate for health life style and sport.
Azerbaijan succeeded seven medals -one golden, two silver and four bronze medals. Azerbaijan took 29th place due to the number of medals and 39th place in accordance with quality.
Heydar Aliyev Foundation was established on 10 March 2004. Its goal is to study the rich heritage of the Nationwide Leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, and train the new generations in the spirit of ideas of national statehood created by him, implement programs and projects in the sphere of science, education, culture, health, sport and ecology; contribute to restoration of religious tolerance, establishment of civil society; preserve national and moral values in the process of integration and worldwide globalization.
