Death-Rate of Seals in Caspian Sea Rises

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Huseinli / The Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry carried out monitoring in the Azerbaijani territory of the Caspian Sea due to the rise in the death-rate of seals in the Kazakhstan territory of the Caspian Sea.

The Ministry reported on the 18th of June that there were no specific reasons as to why the increase in deaths of seals occurred within the Azerbaijani territory.

Some 592 corps of seals, 90% which were seal-calf's, were revealed along the coasts of the Kazakhstan territory of the Sea in 2007.

As a result of laboratory analyses, held in Kazakhstan, entrails of the seals did not include heavy metal, salts and pesticides. The examination of the sea water revealed no oil pollution.

As a result of primary analyses, the main result for the death of the seals was due to a plague .

The National Park of Absheron was established for the protection of seals and other types of fauna in the Azizbayov region of Baku on the territory of Shah Dili .

The Ministry holds corresponding measures for the protection of seals in the Caspian Sea.
