Azrebaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / On 22 August, the Baku Appeals Court considered the appeal of fifteen Azerbaijani journalists regarding the resolution of Sabayl District Court, a source at the Institute of Media Rights stated.
On 17 April and 15 May the police prevented the demonstration of a group of journalists who were demanding freedom of the press.
The journalists appealed to the Sabayl District Court with a lawsuit regarding the unlawful use of physical force against the demonstration's participants. However, the judge rejected the lawsuit. An appeal was made to the Appeals Court regarding the resolution of the Sabayl District Court.
During the Appeals Court's hearing presided over by Judge Alesker Aliyev, the journalists' advocate, Elchin Sadikhov, said that the legislation has been fully observed whilst devising the lawsuit. However, the lawsuit was rejected and it may be explained through the insufficient study of the case and wrong application of the law, the advocate said asking to annul the resolution.
The decision on the appeal will be made on 30 August. In the future, the journalists will ask that the police officers who conducted themselves illegally during the demonstrations to compensate the journalists in the amount of AZN 4,500,000.
