The driving time from Tbilisi to Oni city will decrease by 1.5 hours, from six to 4.5 hours, after construction and reconstruction works of Zemo Imereti-Racha 5-km highway will be finished, Trend reports citing the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.
At this stage, the road construction works are in their active phase.
The road starts from Sachkhere city and passes through Sareki, Kvemo Khevi, Uzunta, Shkneri, Bokva, Kvashkhieti, and Zudali villages. The road will be connected to the Ambrolauri-Oni road that is a 20-km way from Ambrolauri city and 5 km way from Oni. The project consists of 7 phases.
The major part of the road crosses the woodland in the Kheura Gorge which is 1,000-1,500 meters above the sea.
At this stage, the construction works proceed simultaneously in 5 lots. The construction is planned to be completed by 2021.
The total value of the project is 105 million lari ($34.4 million).
