Electric public transport: Iran’s strategy to cut down on fuel consumption

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 21. Iran plans to import electric vehicles (buses, taxis, vans, and motorcycles) worth 1.04 billion euros, the Director General of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), Mohammad Reza Farzin said, Trend reports.

The director noted that in this regard, an agreement has been reached between Iran's Central Bank and the Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade on the import of electric vehicles to Iran, and the needed foreign currency will be allocated by the CBI.

Farzin added that the import of electric vehicles will take place based on the proposal of Tehran Municipality.

“In addition, 1 billion euros will be allocated to the Tehran Municipality for the purpose of purchasing the necessary equipment and supplies related to the city's infrastructure,” he said.

The Iranian government intends to implement various plans to reduce the consumption of gasoline and diesel in the country. One of these plans is the use of electric public transport. Iran is interested in importing electric vehicles in addition to making efforts to produce electric vehicles within the country.
