As a part of the first phase of the project establishing a social complex at the Boyuk Shor Lake, The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) will hold extensive ecological monitoring and strengthen and purify the dam, the head of SOCAR's Ecology Department, Azer Aliyev, said.

The project to clear the Boyuk Shore Lake and create a social area here was included in the 2006-2010 Comprehensive Plan of Activities.[...] The project consists of two parts, the first is to monitor and clear the site and strengthen the dam, and the second part is to construct an establishment for social or sporting purposes here," Aliyev said.

According to Aliyev, the company has launched primary research work and held monitoring (particularly, at the artificial reservoirs to store oil stationed there) for preparation of the project. Then monitoring on these sites will be expanded. As a result the standard for the necessary clearing and the volume of oil sludge will be determined and the technology and the work necessary for the phased processing of the sludge will be chosen.

Results of monitoring carried out by SOCAR will be incorporated into the project. The second phase involves the design for the complex, which will be built at this site.

SOCAR also conducts topographical work on the site for the drainage of Beyuk Shore Lake. Those works are planned to be completed by late 2009, the company said earlier.

SOCAR's Geology and Topography Department has started a study on the composition and characteristics of ground rocks as part of the drainage of the Boyuk Shor Lake, SOCAR said earlier. 28 exploration wells with a 10-meter depth in a 50-hectare unit are planned to be drilled. 15 more wells will undergo statistical studies and there will be laboratory verification of species. The drained areas are undergoing drilling and 16 wells have already been drilled.
