U.S. wants to see Turkmenistan among the leaders in the issue of energy security and energy supplies, said the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the meeting with Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhamedov on Sept. 22, the U.S. Department of State reported.

The meeting was held in New York, where the Turkmen leader arrived to attend the next session of the UN General Assembly. According to reports, during the meeting they also talked about the interest of American oil companies to develop oil and gas fields in Turkmenistan. In this regard, Berdimuhamedov is supposed to meet with some of the heads of these companies.

Turkmenistan is one of the key suppliers of natural gas in the Caspian region. U.S. State Department has repeatedly highlighted its support for Ashgabat in diversifying energy resources to world markets, in particular access to Europe via the Caspian Sea. Clinton noted the important role of supplies from Central Asia, especially from Turkmenistan, in providing natural gas to European Nabucco pipeline project.
