Kazakhstan-based Central Asia Metals to use renewables in reduction of carbon footprint

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 16

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Central Asia Metals plc, which operates Kounrad copper mine in Kazakhstan, is planning to reduce its carbon footprint, the company told Trend.

The company noted that in this regard, the scoping study on building a potential solar plant at Kounrad operation close to Balkhash was held last year (to a preliminary economic assessment level of detail).

“Now we will upgrade this to a full feasibility study with firm numbers. We will then make a decision whether to move the project forwards,” the official noted.

As for the planned capacity of the future power plant, it will be firmed up as part of the feasibility work.

“The electricity generated would be used to in part power our copper operations - as a Group, we are looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and our greenhouse gas emissions and this is driving our rationale for the study,” the official added.

Central Asia Metals is a diversified company that operates low-cost mineral assets, producing the base metals that are essential for modern living, safely and sustainably for all of our stakeholders.

To complement its Kounrad copper operation in Kazakhstan, the company added the Sasa zinc and lead mine in North Macedonia to its portfolio in 2017.
