BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 16. The power generation of Iran’s thermal power plants increased by about 8 percent, over the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), compared to the preceding Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), an official of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Omid Abdolmaleki said, Trend reports citing Iranian Energy Ministry.

The official noted that the country's thermal power plants generated a total of 324 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last Iranian year.

“Of this, 181 billion kilowatt-hours were generated by combined cycle power units, 84 billion kilowatt-hours – by steam units and 58 billion kilowatt-hours – by gas units,” he added.

According to Abdolmaleki, the conversion of gas units of thermal power plants into combined cycle units is one of the most effective methods to increase the efficiency of the country's electricity network. Moreover, it helps to protect the environment and reduce fuel consumption in the electricity industry.

The official also said that a combined cycle unit consists of two gas turbines with a capacity of 159 megawatt-hours and a steam turbine with a capacity of 160 megawatt-hours. This allows the power plant's efficiency to increase from about 34 percent to 50 percent without the use of any additional fuel.

In total, Iran's all power plants including, thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, and etc. generated 359 million megawatt-hours of electricity over the last Iranian year. About 95 percent of this is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.
