Pilot projects for using geothermal power to be worked out in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 23. Pilot projects for using geothermal and biomass energy will be worked out in Azerbaijan, Trend reports with reference to the Strategy for socio-economic development of Republic of Azerbaijan for 2022-2026.

As such, during the period from 2022 to 2026 it is planned to expand the opportunities for using geothermal and biomass energy. To this end, the ministries of economy, ecology and mineral resources, as well as Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR will define pilot projects and ensure yearly positive dynamics in use of geothermal and biomass energy.

In addition, it is planned to study the offshore wind potential and carry out preparatory work for using it. For this purpose, the relevant institutions should put forward proposals. The preparatory work for using the offshore wind potential is to be completed by end-2026.

The potential of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan is 27,000 MW, including 3,000 MW in wind energy, 23,000 MW in solar energy, 380 MW in biomass energy, and 520 MW in the energy of mountain rivers.

The total installed capacity of electricity production in Azerbaijan is 7 542 megawatts, and the total capacity of power plants using renewable energy sources, including large hydroelectric power plants, is 1 304 megawatts.
