BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 30. Iran's gas production is expected to increase by 30-40 million cubic meters per day for the current year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji told reporters after meeting with new Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan Batyr Amanov in Tehran on May 30, Trend reports.

According to Owji, Iran has signed a number of agreements to increase production from its both own and joint gas fields with other countries.

The minister said that Iranian Oil Ministry has envisaged various solutions in order to eliminate the daily shortage of 240 million cubic meters between gas production and consumption in the country.

“Due to lack of investments in increasing gas storage facilities in the most gas-consuming regions of the country during the past years, there is a shortage in gas supply in the cold months of the year,” he added.

Owji also noted that Iran's Oil Ministry can fully fill the country's liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and SNG storages by the 6th month (August 23, 2023). Taking into account that 95 percent of the country’s thermal power plants are gas-fired, the ministry can supply more than 300 million cubic meters of gas to these stations daily.

Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Reportedly, Iran's gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters.

There are currently 616 power units operating in 134 TPPs in Iran. The power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants is 74,198 megawatt-hours.
