BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 17

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The transit of goods by trucks through Iran increased by 111 percent in volume, during the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2021), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director General of the Transit and International Affairs Department of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO) Javad Hedayati told Mehr New Agency, Trend reports.

According to Hedayati, the transit of goods by trucks amounted to 6.7 million tons. Meanwhile, in the same period last Iranian year, the figure stood at 3.2 million.

“Along with the increase, it should be noted that the transit of goods by trucks through Iran has almost stopped in two routes. One of these routes was Turkmenistan. So, goods were transited from Europe and Turkey via Iran to Turkmenistan, and then to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan,” he added.

The director-general noted that Turkmenistan has closed borders due to coronavirus pandemic. In addition to Iranian trucks, 35,000 foreign trucks were moving in this route per day.

Hedayati emphasized that The second transit route by truck through Iran was Afghanistan.

“Due to the change of government in Afghanistan, restrictions on the country's banking system, as well as the fact that some countries’ businessmen are wary of trade with Afghan businessmen have led to significant reductions in cargo transportation,” he said.
