Cargo transit through Iran down - IRICA

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 30. Cargo transit through Iran decreased by 5.38 percent, during the first two months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through May 21, 2023), compared to the same period in the last year, Director General of Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Mohammad Rezvanifar said, Trend reports.

Rezvanifar said that in total, approximately 2.33 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran for 2 months.

The director general added that Iran is seeking to increase cargo transit through its territories by creating and activating new transit routes in various directions.

Meanwhile, in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023), more than 12.9 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran. This is an increase of 2.2 percent compared to the preceding year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).

In total, Iran's non-oil trade turnover amounted to 25.7 million tons worth approximately $15.5 billion for two months.

Reportedly, Iran attaches great importance to the International North-South and East-West corridors. It intends to further increase cargo transit via the country by improving railway lines within the mentioned corridors.
