BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 12. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) are launching a project in Kyrgyzstan to help local vulnerable rural communities, Trend reports citing the press service of UN Kyrgyzstan.

The GCF-funded project, will support over 100,000 food-insecure people living in Osh, Batken and Naryn provinces, boosting their adaptive capacities and reduce their vulnerability to the climate crisis.

“WFP, with the GCF and partners, will help boost climate action and livelihood diversification, which will ultimately strengthen the overall economic resilience of communities living in areas prone to natural disasters,” the WFP Country Director and Representative in Kyrgyzstan Kojiro Nakai said.

The main goals of this project are:

- dissemination of climate services to manage climate risks;

- construction of small-scale climate risk reductions infrastructure;

- sharing of best practices to inform communities and improve decision-making;

- focused effort to support climate change adaptation actions at the community level.

In recent decades, Kyrgyzstan has experienced increased weather variability such as disrupted rainfall patterns, increasingly heavy snowfalls, higher numbers of floods and mudflows in the spring, and a rise in drought and severe cold spells.
