Italian speaker urges expansion of ties with Iran

(IRNA) - Speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Fausto Bertinotti here on Wednesday called for expansion of Tehran-Rome wide-ranging ties particularly in the area of parliamentary affairs.

During a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Rome Abolfazl Zohrevand, he highlighted the key role played by the Islamic Republic of Iran in regional affairs.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating situation in the Mideast region, Bertinotti expressed the hope Iran-Italy cooperation will help restore peace and tranquility to the region, reports Trend.

The Iranian envoy, for his part, stressed the need for more exchange visits between the two countries' senior officials, saying this will lead to better understanding and increase mutual cooperation in all fields.

He expressed the hope that Italy, which is an influential member of the EU, can pave the way for Europe to gain a better understanding of Iran's principled foreign policies and domestic developments.

Latest regional and international developments and issues of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting.
