Four people were pulled from under the wreckage of a residential building that collapsed in Sana'a on Wednesday but five remained trapped under the rubble, civil defence official said.

The building's owner, a retired Air Force pilot, was unharmed, but his 8-year-old granddaughter suffered severe leg fractures, officials at the scene told the German Press Agency dpa.

They said the man and the girl were sleeping on the fifth floor of the building, which stood intact on a pile of rubble that was once the four floors that had crumbled underneath.

Two women were later rescued, the officials said.

Rescuers worked into the evening to clear the rubble by hand and bulldozers in search of the missing.
