Hundreds of protestors gathered here Saturday calling on the president and government to step down, as mobile phone networks partly resumed in the city.
The protestors gathered in Tahrir Square, in central Cairo, where anti-government demonstrations started peacefully on Tuesday afternoon before turning violent in the following days, Xinhua reported.
Witnesses said several tanks were parked near the Tahrir Square, but no intervention in the protest was seen so far.
Meanwhile, two mobile phone networks in the city resumed operation but the Internet service remained cut.
Early Saturday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced he had ordered the government to resign, saying the new cabinet would bring more democracy to the country.
The current cabinet is expected to announce its resignation as early as noon today.
