Yemen to pass law prohibiting children being recruited into army

Yemeni activists have urged parliament to pass a law prohibiting the recruitment of children into the army and their participation in armed conflicts, Anadolu agency said today.

The activists who include Yemeni journalists and lawyers, called for cooperation with the German embassy in the country.

According to the UN, nearly half of the total number of fighters in Yemeni tribes supporting the government who call themselves the People's Army and the rebel groups of the Al-Houthi group are younger than 18 years old. One managed to register a total of 402 cases of child recruitment by rebels of the Al-Houthi group and 282 cases of child recruitment by troops of the People's Army.

About 189 cases of child homicide and 155 severely wounded cases were registered. Moreover, 59 children were declared as missing by their families after their disappearance at the beginning of the conflict. Parents and relatives do not know anything about the fate of these children, whether they were killed, abducted or recruited.
