Evan Lysacek of the United States upset defending champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia to win the men's figure skating title at the winter Games following the free programme in Vancouver on Thursday, dpa reported.

Lysacek, 24, who was lying second after the short programme, scored 257.67 points to edge Plushenko who scored 256.36.

Japan's Daisuke Takahashi (247.23) got the bronze.

Lysacek, the 2009 world champion who was fourth in Turin in 2006, was one of the few skaters not to make any mistakes at the Pacific Coliseum.

He then had a nervous wait as five after him including Plushenko, who led after the short programme and skated last, failed to reach his score.

"That's my best free programme this season. To do your best when it counts most - I've been waiting for a clean free skate all season," he said in comments before he knew he had won gold.
