A Federal Security Service (FSB) officer and his two children were injured early Saturday as unknown assailants blew up his car in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, a police spokesman said, RIA Novosti reported.

"An unknown explosive device went off when a VAZ-2110 car with a local FSB officer and two children was driving off a private house in the town of Nartkala," the spokesman said.

He said the injured were hospitalized.

An investigation is underway.

Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia's southern mainly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus.

The Kremlin has pledged to wage "a ruthless fight" against militant groups but also acknowledged a need to tackle unemployment, organized crime, clan rivalry and corruption as causes of the ongoing violence in the region.
