Ukraine, Kiev / Trend corr. Z.Novosvitski / The Ukrainian President, Viktor Yushchenko, called the Regions Party's attempt to hold a referendum regarding the status of the Russian language and joining the Ukraine to Nato a 'crazy political stunt'.

The first step in the pre-campaign is to just speak of the referendum on the Russian language status linking it with NATO.

The words on the status of the Russian language will remain for a long period of time in the public's consciousness, including the former President's ruling, Leonid Kuchma. As soon as elections were held, the issue concerning the status of the Russian language automatically arose, Yushchenko said.

Politicians and some political forces are attempting to destabilize the situation in the Ukraine.

The Regions Party is trying to trigger a referendum in the Ukraine on three issues.

The 'regionalists' intend to propose that Ukrainians express their opinion concerning granting status to the Russian language on the same level with the Ukrainian language.

The referendum may be held after sixty or seventy-five days beginning from 7 September, Boris Kolesnikov, the head of the election staff of the Regions party, said.
