A senior Iranian diplomat says ongoing crises in the Middle East and Africa should be settled through political approaches instead of military intervention, Press TV reported.

"In order to solve regional crises, emphasis should be laid on political solutions rather than military issues," Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a Tuesday meeting with senior Ugandan diplomat Rossette Nyirinkindi Katungye in Tehran.

He added that extremism and terrorism threaten all countries in the world, particularly those in the Middle East and Africa.

The Iranian official called for enhanced cooperation with Uganda to fight extremism and terrorism.

For her part, the Ugandan diplomat said extremism and terrorism have caused problems for African countries including Somalia and Nigeria. She said her country welcomes cooperation with Iran to counter the two phenomena.

Katungye also hailed growing relations between Tehran and Kampala at regional and international levels.
