Tbilisi, Georgia, Feb. 17
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:
The Georgian Prime Minister, the leader of the "Georgian Dream" Irakli Garibashvili initiated an increase for elections to local government bodies up to 50 per cent + one voice.
The mayors of government authorities in all cities will be elected on the basis of just 50 percent + one voice, the press-service of the Premier said on Feb.17. Also, in all municipalities of the country "gamgebeli" (head of local administration) will be elected only in the case of overcoming the 50-percent barrier.
The requirement of 50-percent barrier + one voice was proposed by extra-parliamentary opposition. However, the authorities were ready to enter the 40-percent barrier instead of the existing 30 per cent.
The Electoral Code of the amendment is already partially adopted by the Parliament in the second reading. Now, this measurement may be revised if the parliamentary majority will support the initiative of Garibashvili.
