Turkmenistan to hold elections to gengesh in July

The Turkmen parliament decided to hold the elections to gengesh on July 26 in 2009.

An office term of members of a gengesh covers 3 years.

In accordance with the Constitution, the elections will be held on an alternative base through general, equal and direct election right with a secret polling in line with one-mandate constituencies. Each constituency elects one member of the gengesh.

Under powers set by the Turkmen Constitution, members of the gengesh specify key directions of economic, social and cultural development in their territories, measures on rational use of natural resources and protection of environment, as well as solve other issues.

"Under new historical conditions, a gengesh as a local-self government aims to be an active agents of the country's ongoing reforms and ambitious development programs, especially improving social and living conditions of the region's population," the Turkmen dovlat khabarlari state news service reported.
