EU supports the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia, said the EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby.

"The position of the EU is the opening of borders in the region, and we are ready to support the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia," Semneby told reporters at the airport upon arrival in Baku.

European Union Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby arrived in Baku on a one-day visit. As formerly the Baku office of the European Union told Trend , Semneby will hold consultations with government officials of Azerbaijan.

Regarding the relationship of normalization of relations of Ankara and Yerevan with the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Semneby said that the EU does not want to speculate on what kind of relationship is possible between these two processes.

Semneby hoped that the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be finalized as a result of a series of meetings between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

In the negotiations under the mediation of Switzerland, Turkey and Armenia reached an agreement on the beginning of "internal political consultations" regarding the signing of the Protocol on establishing diplomatic relations and Protocol on the development of bilateral relations, said Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Agreement on the establishment of diplomatic ties between Turkey and Armenia is planned to be signed on October 10. Signed protocols will be submitted for approval by the parliaments of two countries.
