Imposing restrictions on the Internet should not limit the exchange of information, OSCE Special Representative on Media Freedom Dunja Mijatovic said today.

During a meeting with students in Astana on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton stressed the need to introduce certain restrictions on information in the Internet. These restrictions must apply to pedophilia, security and cyber threats.

WikiLeaks, specializing in distributing secret documents, gave several influential U.S. and European media outlets a quarter of a million secret diplomatic telegrams and letters sent from U.S. diplomatic missions situated in various countries to the U.S. State Department.

The documents marked as "secret" disclose the details of the correspondence of President Barack Obama's administration on various crises and conflicts. However, the most harmful facts among the leaked information are likely the harsh statements of U.S. diplomats about Muslim presidents and European leaders, quotes from supposedly private conversations between foreign leaders and U.S. officials and Hilary Clinton's demands to spy on members of the U.N. Security Council from Russia, China, France and Great Britain.

Most world leaders doubt the authenticity of the documents.

Mijatovic declined to comment on the information disseminated by the website and the fact that its founder Julian Assange is now wanted by Interpol.

"I monitor this situation," he said. "I will inform the public about our decision."
