Azerbaijan’s population growth requires creation of over 100,000 jobs annually, chairman of the Commission on Regulation and Coordination of Labor Relations, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Ali Ahmadov said at the commission’s meeting May 25.

During the last 15 years, Azerbaijan’s population has increased by 1.5 million people, he noted.

Ali Ahmadov said that the population of Azerbaijan annually grows by 1.2 percent. He noted that employment issues in Azerbaijan are one of the important directions of state policy.

“The work carried out in Azerbaijan in the employment sphere bears fruit,” he said. “For the past 15 years, a great number of jobs have been opened in Azerbaijan and steps have been taken to provide the population with decent jobs. The unemployment rate in Azerbaijan is within five percent. The demographic situation in some developed European countries differs from the situation in Azerbaijan. The population is growing in Azerbaijan, while the population is declining in those countries.”

He added that about five million people of Azerbaijan’s population are able-bodied.

“Fifty-four percent of the country’s population lives in rural areas,” he said. “This is very serious issue.”
