BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 16. Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova met with a Slovenian parliamentary delegation led by Bojan Čebela, head of the Slovenia–Azerbaijan interparliamentary friendship group, the parliamentary press service told Trend.

The meeting emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering friendly, respectful, and mutually beneficial relations with Slovenia. Both sides acknowledged the strong potential for developing bilateral ties across various sectors and underscored the importance of high-level visits and ongoing political dialogue in strengthening relations.

The discussion highlighted opportunities for cooperation not only in the energy sector but also in expanding economic relations and mutual trade. Areas such as transportation, green energy, education, science, and culture were also noted as promising fields for deeper collaboration. It was emphasized that cultural exchanges contribute to strengthening people-to-people ties.

Parliamentary diplomacy was described as a key component of bilateral relations. Speaker Gafarova noted the vital role of friendship groups in advancing interparliamentary engagement through regular dialogue and exchanges.

Čebela conveyed greetings from Urška Klakočar Zupančič, Speaker of the Slovenian Parliament, and shared his positive impressions of the visit to Azerbaijan. He emphasized the importance of further deepening parliamentary cooperation.

The Slovenian Head also congratulated Azerbaijan on its high-level hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and confirmed Slovenia’s participation in the parliamentary meetings held under its framework.

The memory of Mehdi Huseynzadeh–Mihajlo, a national hero who bravely fought in the battles for Slovenia’s liberation from fascism, was also honored during the meeting. This gesture was recognized as a testament to the historical friendship between the two nations.

The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
