Azerbaijani President's Visit Gave Impetus to Development of Economic Cooperation  Azerbaijani Finances Minister

The first meeting of US-Azerbaijani commission on economic partnership began in Baku on 7 February 2007, Trend reports.

The co-chairs of the commission are Azerbaijani Finance Minister Samir Sharifov, and US Deputy Secretary of State, Daniel Sullivan.

In his opening remarks the Azerbaijani Finance Minister noted that the meeting was for the fist time held in such large format bringing together the Justice Minister, the Emergency Situation Minister, the Minister for Economic Development, the Taxes Minister, the Agriculture Minister, the Prosecutor General, the Head of State Customs Committee, the State oil Fund of Azerbaijan, the National Bank of Azerbaijan, representatives of the Ministry of Fuel and Energy, and Communications Ministry, Parliament.

The Minister said that Azerbaijan's cooperation with the United States has entered qualitatively new phase after Azerbaijani President's Ilham Aliyev's visit to the United States in April 2006.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's visit to the United States gave an impetus to further development of economic cooperation between the two countries and strengthening of strategic partnership in political, humanitarian and economic spheres, he noted.

The two sides reached an agreement on alternation of status of the working group on economic relationships to a commission on economic partnership on the base of the memorandum signed with this respect.

The Minister said that cooperation between the United States and Azerbaijan will be developed.

US Deputy Secretary of State asserted his country's intention in expansion of cooperation, which is testified by the composition of the current commission.

The commission will discuss current state of cooperation between countries, enhancing diversification of Azerbaijani economy, continuation of reforms in financial sector, intensification of Azerbaijan's entrance to the World Trade Organization (WTO), strengthening of business climate, development of energy sector, continuing of a dialogue on legalization of air transportation.

The meeting is expected to adopt 8 documents: Memorandum on mutual understanding on the project on State Investments Policy, Memorandum on mutual understanding on the project on Treasury Information Management System, Memorandum on mutual understanding on the Improvement of First Medical Aid Service, Memorandum on mutual understanding on the Urgent Medical Aid, Grant Agreement on Financing Purchase of goods and services under Phase II of Technical Assistance to Project on Institutional Development of State oil Fund of Azerbaijan.
