Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The attempt of the Azerbaijani National Independent Party (ANIP) to hold a rally in front of the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan was unsuccessful. The activists of ANIP tried to rally with the purpose to support and protect the rights of Azerbaijanis residing in Iran.

The police did not permit the participators to rally in front of the Embassy. Ten activists were detained and brought to the police department. The activists were not allowed to read the text of the resolution nor were they allowed to submit it to the Embassy.

The resolution outlined demands to stop chauvinistic policy, the persecution and pressure on Azerbaijanis residing in the Iranian Province, South Azerbaijan, and for Iran to recognize the constitutional and national rights of Azerbaijanis residing in Iran and to release Azerbaijani activists of the Party from arrest.

The ANIP was formed in 1992.
