Meeting between Georgian, Russian Presidents Positive

Georgia, Tbilisi / Тrend corr N. Kirtskhalia / The meeting between the Georgian and Russian Presidents is a positive move towards settlement of the relationship between the two countries, the head of the Foreign Relations Committee at the Georgian Parliament, Kote Gabashvili, stated.

"We did not expect the meeting between the Presidents, Mikhail Saakashvili and Vladimir Putin, to result in a breakthrough. But the fact of the serious negotiations is evident and it inspires definite hope for improving the relationship between the two countries. Although we do not have any data about the results of the meeting, we still know a meeting is better than nothing," the Chairman noted.

Gabashvili stressed that the very fact of the meeting implies a lot. "That is a very positive point in our relationship with Russia and a possible factor of change in the position of Moscow towards Tbilisi," he said, adding that the meeting was of a constructive and positive character.

"I would like to note that the relations between the Presidents were calm and businesslike," Gabashvili said. At the same time he said that any strategic breakthrough is unlikely to appear.

Earlier, the Georgian President stated that the main result of his meeting with the Russian President was unambiguous proof of Georgia's territorial integrity. "After the latest ambiguous statements on indivisibility of Georgia, Vladimir Putin's statements prove Russia's adherence to the territorial integrity of Georgia," he said. The President stressed his satisfaction with the meeting.

Meanwhile, the opposition considers the meeting to be held only for the sake of visibility. The leader of the 'Democratic Front' parliamentary opposition faction, David Zurabishvili, said, "Warming of the relationship between the two countries is unlikely."
