Azerbaijani Delegation Did not Observe Serious Breaches in Parliamentary Elections in Kazakhstan

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / The delegation of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan did not observe breaches which may affect the results of the elections in Kazakhstan, a representative of the delegation, Rovzat Gasimov, informed Trend from Kazakhstan by telephone on 21 August.

On 19 August extraordinary parliamentary elections tool place in Kazakhstan. As a result of the elections, the pro-presidential party Nur Otan won with 88.05% of the votes. No other party gained more than 7% of the votes.

The opposition claims that the results of the parliamentary elections have been falsified. The OSCE observation mission stated that the law was broken during the elections and that elections were not held in accordance with international standards. In addition, the OSCE assessed the elections as a progressive step for democratization.

Gasimov said that the CEC delegation observed the elections in 15 polling stations. "We did not observe any breaches that may have affected the results of the elections," he said.

According to him, the elections were organized well. The conclusion of the Azerbaijani observers regarding the turnout of voters was near to that of the official information of the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan. According Azerbaijani observers the turnout of the voters was nearly 65%, but according to official data it was 64.56%. The result of the exit-poll held by separate organizations was close to official data.

Speaking of the conclusion of the Kazakh opposition, Gasimov said that in all countries, breaches are observed in elections. If they do not affect the results of the election, it does not need to be a problem for them. "We also saw the dissatisfaction of the opposition representatives. However, the Chairman of the Kazakh CEC said that the breaches will be investigated and measures will be taken," Gasimov said.

As regards to the criticism from the OSCE, Gasimov said that everybody assesses the results on the basis of their own observations.

He added that 11 Azerbaijani observers observed the parliamentary elections as part of the OSCE observation mission.

The Azerbaijani delegation was headed by the CEC Chairman, Mazahir Panahov. The delegation also included Head of CEC International Relations Department, Rovzat Gasimov and MP Farhad Garibov.
