Journalists should not be jailed due to their activities: US Embassy’s Official

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 March /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / Journalists should not be jailed due to their activities, said the Head of Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan, Jonathan Henick, said on 18 March.

According to him, the U.S. position on this issue remains unchanged. Since the end of 2007, eight journalists were in the jail in Azerbaijan. Most of them were arrested with accusations of slander and insult. By the end of Dec, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, signed an amnesty order which freed five journalists. At present, three journalists are still in the imprisonment.
