Azerbaijan, Baku, Apr.5 / Trend, M. Aliyev /
A new admissions mechanism after a state decree will force Azerbaijani universities to pay closer attention to entrance exams, Parliamentary Standing Commission on Education and Science Chairman, Azerbaijani State Economy University Rector Shamsaddin Hajiyev told Trend .
According to a presidential decree signed Feb. 10, universities will be funded on the basis of state orders from 2010-2011, while personnel training will be provided for based on per capita funding. As a result, students will choose their educational institutions based on their test scores.
According to Hajiyev, universities earlier showed little interest in attracting students.
"After applying the new mechanism, universities will be forced to increase their competitive potential to attract students. In particular, they will offer jobs after high school, educational fairs, and help solving housing issues," he said.
